The Legacy and Evolution of Preservation Hall Jazz with Ben Jaffe, Nicole Mitchell on Pitt Jazz, Guitarist Jack Turner and More on The Scene on WZUM

A visit with Ben Jaffe, the Tuba/Bass playing leader of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans, visiting Pittsburgh on October 30 after a trip to Cuba that changed Everything.

We also talked with the new Chair of Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, Nicole Mitchell - with exciting new plans and an extra concert for the 49th Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, including the multi-talented Amina Claudine-Myers.

Bill Strickland shares his good wishes from the recent MCG Jazz Legends Induction event.

This week on the Scene, more than we can pack into an hour -

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band

..and, a homecoming of sorts for guitarist Jack Turner - the Pittsburgh native left town for the road with Charles Earland back in the 70’s, has recently been established in Atlanta, but is coming home for a weekend gig with Tony Campbell at Wallaces Whiskey Room in East Liberty, Saturday, October 19th at 5.

We also share music from the Rova Saxophone Quartet (with a show Sunday night at the First Unitarian Church), Joey Alexander (with two shows at MCG Jazz on October 19th) and pianist Craig Davis, bringing a musical exploration of the sounds around Katherine Hepburn, Thursday October 24.

A reminder that Jazz Central is a great place to keep up with so much great music on the Scene!

Thursday at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon and Sunday night at 5 - the Scene on WZUM with Scott Hanley
