Ella sang one song in England - on the MCG Jazz Spotlight Hour - Friday and Sunday Nights at 6
MCG Jazz just got back from a swinging trip to England with Smithsonian Jazz - and on reflection, Marty Ashby and Renée Govanucci realized how many great jazz artists have performed in England.
On this edition of the MCG Jazz Spotlight, the highlight is London. Maynard Ferguson with his remarkable band do “In a Mellow Tone.”
Ella Fitzgerald sings “Every time We Say Goodbye,” and apologizes for only performing it in England, because it was never a hit anywhere else.
Dizzy Gillespie with an All-Star UN Orchestra from the Late 1980’s at Royal Festival Hall with Tin Tin Deo - and Bill Evans with a delightful rendition of Henry Mancini’s “Days of Wine and Roses,” recorded weeks before Bill Evans’ death.
Plus, Jeff Beck, Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich and Count Basie - all from London!
The MCG Jazz Spotlight, 6pm Friday and Sunday on WZUM.
