Reggie Watkins on The Scene 2019 Reggie Watkins and Scott Hanley

Thursday night at 6, repeated Sunday at 5 on “THE SCENE” on WZUM - we visit with trombonist and bandleader Reggie Watkins - a regular all around the Pittsburgh Jazz Scene, from the Steeltown Horns, to his regular quartet gig at Eddie V’s on Thursdays and much more.

We talk about his time with Jason Mraz, Maynard Ferguson, Scott Bradlee’s Post Modern Jukebox and much more. We also hear the story behind the 2001 Maynard Ferguson project produced by Phil Ramone with vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur - when Reggie also served as Music Director and Arranger - in a band that also had Pittsburgh area notables such as Jeff Lashway - piano; Brian Stahurski - double bass; and Brian Wolfe - drums.

We also revisit the Pittsburgh Jazz Days of Summer, Piano Day Pittsburgh, and look again at the weekend’s August 31st celebration and fundraiser for the 37th Anniversary of the Afro American Music Institute at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater.

All on the radio on WZUM!
