Benny Benack III - Proudly Pittsburgh, Returns on the Pittsburgh Jazz Scene
A Lot of Livin’ to Do
Benny Benack III has a jazz story, rooted in Pittsburgh. He’s been working out of New York for many years, now - and often shares his story of the Pittsburgh Jazz family that raised him. We visited with Benny this week, in preparation for his CD Release party at Alphabet City on February 19. Plus, we listen to some of his new CD!
New York got an early party on the project, at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, - and joining him was his working band, PLUS his Dad, Benny Benack II, and iconic vocalist Marilyn Maye. Great stories and music to share.
The Pittsburgh jazz scene continues to be filled with many local combinations of entertainment and creativity - more than 225 during January, and probably more than that in February.
We play music from some of the upcoming performers, including Joshua Redman, who will be at the August Wilson Center, February 15th, Bobby Watson and the band Horizon at the Greer Cabaret, February 11th, Richie Cole with Reggie Watkins at Quantum Spirits February 12, and Brazilian guitarist, vocalist and mouth percussionist Badi Assad, coming to Uptown at the Gist Studio on February 2nd.
The Scene - Thursdays at 6pm, Friday at Saturdays at noon, Sundays at 5pm on WZUM.
