Creed Taylor - and CTI Records in the MCG Jazz Spotlight
Tune in to WZUM Friday and Sunday night at 6, Saturday at one to join Marty Ashby, Executive Producer of MCG Jazz and Renée J. Govanucci, Director, MCG Jazz, as they stroll through just a sampling of the 1970’s recordings of the CTI Record label.
Creed Taylor founded CTI in 1967, as a part of A&M records before going independent in 1970. The first album in ‘67 was “A Day in the Life” by the legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery.
The roster of CTI was rich and diverse - including Chet Baker, Jim Hall Ron Carter, Eumir Deodato, Don Sebesky, Astrud Gilberto, Bob James, Hubert Laws and Pittsburgh natives Stanley Turrentine and George Benson.
There are many hours of CTI recordings to dive into - this time out, Marty and Renée sample sounds from:
Chet Baker, Autumn Leaves
Paul Desmond, Wave
Don Sebesky with Freddie Hubbard and Grover Washington, Jr., Free as a Bird
Bob James, Westchester Lady
Stanley Turrentine with Milt Jackson, Speed Ball
Hubert Laws, Pensativa
George Benson, Take Five
The sounds are advanced and transformative - and retro, too. Immerse yourself into a time when jazz album artwork fills 12 inches, and the sonic palette, lush and full.
The MCG Jazz Spotlight on WZUM - Friday and Sunday nights at 6, Saturday afternoons at 1.
