The Pittsburgh Scene in September - improvising, creating and adapting
A year ago at this time, WZUM’s Jazz events calendar, Jazz Central had about 240 gigs going on in the month - touring national performers filling the main stages while scores of venues featured local and regional artists. A resurgence of the art and collaboration of jazz, all around us.
Now, six months into a public health crisis, the performing arts scene is struggling. Large venues are shuttered. Outdoor dining has opened up a bit, and between virtual and in-person events, the Pittsburgh jazz scene is seeing anywhere from 12 to 20 events a week in-person and online. That showing has been filled with great effort, collaboration and creativity.
This time on the show - we talk to saxophonist and bandleader Tony Campbell about upcoming live and virtual events he’s involved with, from a weekend jam session at 1700 Penn Ave in the strip to the Village Tavern on the West End, where the late Richie Cole had developed a strong following in recent years. Plus, a new online series of “The Songs of Pittsburgh,” which has attracted thousands of views in recent weeks.
Trombonist Reggie Watkins has been busy with a weekly gig on the patio at Quantum Spirits in Carnegie - but this weekend, he’s having Jeff Bush substitute - because Reggie is performing with Walter White and his very big band for an online show for the Detroit Jazz Festival on Sunday.
We also hear music from Waclav Zimpel, one of the performers set to play for the Virtual Jazz Poetry Month events in September from Alphabet City / City of Asylum on the North Side - now in it’s 16th year.
Plus, a musical memory of Charlie Parker from Pittsburgh’s Eddie Jefferson, Richie Cole from his Hollywood Madness record with Bruce Forman and the Manhattan Transfer, and Jazz sounds from Pittsburgh young lions and torchbearers.
Thursday night at six, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on WZUM
