Jackie and Roy with Stephen Sondheim and Holiday Sounds on the Pittsburgh Scene
The recent passing of Stephen Sondheim had us turning to a recently acquired copy of a special project of Sondheim’s music from Michel’s Pub in New York in 1982 by Jackie Cain and Roy Kral.
Jacke and Roy were a fixture in the music scene for 5 decades, she on beautiful vocals, he on piano and vocals and harmony. They came up during the time of Mike Nichols and Elaine May comedy albums, Blossom Dearie, and the musical convergence of the 1950’s that led them to producer Bob Thiele and this release.
We also listen to holiday sounds from the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, playing at the Pittsburgh Playhouse December 22. Recent holiday sounds from Katie Simone and Tania Grubbs, plus a brand new release featuring Benny Benack III.
Also, we visit with Lisa Ferraro about her Jazz up the Holidays event December 6th at MCGJazz.
The Scene - Thursdays at 6pm, Friday at Saturdays at noon, Sundays at 5pm on WZUM.
