Bill Heid with a New CD, and on 57 years of Music for a Living - the Scene
Pittsburgh native Bill Heid has been a prominent player in the jazz whirl for decades - at piano and organ, and the composer of hundreds of tunes - and it all started in Pittsburgh.
With the advent of his newest release “Dealin’ Wid It” on Savant records, we thought we’d give Bill a call. and we talked for more than an hour!
In the parts we’ve used on the radio, Bill talks about the new record, but also about starting out as a musician in Pittsburgh as a teenager - and also about learning about his father’s musical career that he only recently has gained deeper insights on.
Plus we play music. A lot of it - from the new record, and also with a Bill Heid piano project with Dwayne Dolphin and Roger Humphries from a few years back. Also, sounds from Hendrik Meurkens, the jazz harmonica and vibes artist coming to town for two gigs in June, plus some sounds that Porky Chedwick would approve of from Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, and Roger Humphries and the RH Factor in a recording featuring trumpeter Ian Gordon and saxophonist Don Aliquo Jr, both recently back playing in Pittsburgh.
Some of the clips are here - and some extras, too. And look below for Bill’s interview with master drummer Randy Gelispie.
The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5.
