Catching up with T.S. Monk - the Scene - on WZUM

A visit with drummer, bandleader and composer T.S. Monk. He is also the son of Thelonious Monk.

The last time we spent any time of consequence with T.S. Monk was back in the mid or late 1990’s in New York at either a JazzTimes or IAJE conference, also visiting with Karrin Allyson over music, life and more. We did not have tape rolling, but we had great visit.

Move forward more than a few years later - and there’s still more to talk about - and this time, with a recording to show for it.

T.S. Monk has a new release out with a stellar band. We talked about that, and play some of the music - and we also explore his philosophy of jazz, growing up with a legend - and the friends who would stop by.

For T.S. Monk, the friends stopping by included Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Randy Weston, Max Roach and a legion more.

(Plus - the story of how T.S. Monk’s first Drum Kit arrive at his house - from Art Blakey!)

T.S. Monk on the Scene on the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel, WZUM - Thursday night at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday at 5pm on WZUM
