Stanley Clarke, Melissa Aldana, Dan Wilson, the Blackbyrds' Keith Killgo, and remembering Ramsey Lewis - on the Scene - on WZUM
This weekend has a convergence of legendary bass players in Pittsburgh - with Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke and Buster Williams at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, plus Tony Levin of the Levin Brothers at This is Red in Munhall Sunday night.
We visit with Stanley Clarke about his band N’Forever, which revisits the seminal fusion sounds he and Chick Corea created about 5 decades ago. We talked about a lot of things along the way, too.
Trumpeter Sean Jones and more will present a tribute to the legacy of Donald Byrd during this, the 90th year since his birth. We visit with drummer Keith Killgo of the band The Blackbyrds on the impact and legacy of Donald Byrd as a musician, producer and teacher.
Also, we spend some time with saxophone luminary Melissa Aldana, bringing sound from her newest release to opening set at the Highmark Stadium Stage for the Jazz Fest on Saturday
Plus guitarist Dan Wilson, who has been touring the festival circuit with drummer David Throckmorton as a part of his newest lineup (he’s off to Monterey, next weekend). He also shares stories about the recently departed organist Joey DeFrancesco, who gave Dan some of his first national exposure.
It’s an amazing lineup for the jazz fest this weekend - and more amazing sounds all around the Pittsburgh Region. Find out about all of it at Jazz Centra at WZUM!
The Scene - an hourlong radio show - Thursday night at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday at 5 on WZUM
