Honoring Dwayne Dolphin, hearing the Baylors, Remembering Carla Bley on the Scene

October has been action packed in Pittsburgh for jazz fans and venues - and the rest of the fall continues to be filled with a diverse array of musical riches.

Tuesday October 17 featured the Jazz opening for the newly renovated Greer Cabaret Theater on Penn Avenue with drummer Marcus Baylor and vocalist Jean Baylor and their grammy-nominated group, the Baylor project - featuring Pittsburgh native, bassist Richie Goods.

Richie Goods on stage with the Baylors was a special treat, since one of his Pittsburgh mentors, Dwayne Dolphin was also on the stage at the start of the night receiving the JazzLive Legacy Award from jazz legend Roger Humphries and Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Terri Bell.

The music was great, the venue was stunning and the honor for Dwayne Dolphin well-deserved.

Also this week, pianist Jeff Lashway and vocalist Maura Minteer were back in Pittsburgh for a few days, enough time to fit in a fun quintet date at Con Alma with Reggie Watkins and quintet with Ava Lintz and Jason Washington, Jr.

We also have more to marvel at - touring artists Etienne Charles for Kente Arts at the New Hazlett, October 28; There’s even more to search out at the Jazz Central Calendar in October and beyond - please check it out!

The Scene - Thursday at 6 - Friday and Saturday at noon - Sunday at 5 on WZUM
