A Jazz Train to Pittsburgh - and A Visit with Gregory Porter on the Scene

Gregory Porter

There’s a train that left Philly for Pittsburgh this week - coming into town with several dozen performers and jazz fans from New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia - urged along by pianist and jazz advocate Orrin Evans - who is also one of the headliners for the festival and leading a jam session. too!

WZUM will have booth on the pitch at Highmark Stadium - stop by and say “hi” to me (Scott Hanley), Chuck Leavens, Kate Borger, Mike Canton and more as we celebrate a great jazz weekend. We’ll be broadcasting a bit from the pitch, too!

We visit with vocalist Gregory Porter - who makes note of the great lineup - and shares a secret! There’ll be many other great singers for the festival - including a Sold-out show Friday with Ledisi. We’ll hear music from Highmark Stadium headliners - José James, and brand new releases from Christie Dashiell, and Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter’s Superblue.

September Sounds keep rolling in Pittsburgh, in addition to the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival - plus shows at venues all around the region - from Chris Botti at the Carnegie Music Hall in Homestead Thursday; the Organ Trio Summit with the John Shannon Organ Trio and the Norside Organ Trio at the Thunderbird Music Hall, Friday night September 15 in Lawrenceville; a Friday night Late set at Con Alma with Roger Humphries that’s been dubbed “Indestructible.” and much, much more. We count more than 50 things going on in the Scene - Thursday through Sunday!

Hear about it all - on the Scene - Thursday at 6 - Friday and Saturday at noon - Sunday at 5 on WZUM
