New York, Pittsburgh, the Past, Present and Future on the Scene

This time around, a little bit of everything, including harkening back to the recent past and also the present and maybe the near future of the jazz scene in and around Pittsburgh and all over.

That includes our visit to the Jazz Congress at Jazz at Lincoln Center at the beginning of January. We visit with trumpeter and bandleader Etienne Charles, who had a remarkable big band Creole Orchestra release last year that's been nominated for a Grammy.

We also visit with Grammy nominated Lakecia Benjamin, also saw in the hallways at Jazz at Lincoln Center, plus trumpeter and saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis (he’s often working with Orrin Evans). Caleb also has his own project out, which is a two LP set we'll be featuring, including a disc of the music of Thelonious Monk.

Other new releases to share include guitarist Matt Panayiotis and the Bad Plus (coming to Pittsburgh at City Winery on the 6th of February).

Drummer Reid Hoysen is on the scene this weekend and we’ll be featuring his project that included music of Don DePaula called Natural Gifts.

Plus, some Oliver Nelson sounds in tribute to the MCG Jazz concerts next weekend, “Beyond Stolen Moments” with the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Oliver Nelson Jr.

The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Sunday at 5pm, Friday and Saturday at noon on WZUM.
