Stories, Music and more on the Scene - on the Radio
What a difference a few days can make. The Jazz Scene in Pittsburgh had been averaging more than 200 live events each month since last summer.

Now, COVID-19 has put a halt to all live, in person performances. WZUM is fortunate to have recordings, connections and the megaphone of our website and radio signals - but this is a very different “Scene” than we had expected.
On this week’s program, we talk with organist David Braham, Uniontown native and national recording artist. He was in Washington, PA, for a fundraiser the for the After School Music Program, just before sit-down restaurants and live performances were cancelled, statewide.
We also found a nice long interview with pianist Tom Roberts that we hadn’t aired from last summer - about the importance of Louis Armstrong, the ragtime movement of 110 years ago in Pittsburgh you might not have heard of, and more American and music history worth hearing about.
Music from Pittsburgh native and bassist Richie Goods (who was going to be in town with Vanessa Rubin in April, but postponed) - Richie has a new CD we get to hear, even while he can’t visit in person.
New sounds from Tania Grubbs from the new CD “Live at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar” with David Budway, James Johnson III, Jeff Grubbs and Ron Affif.
Restaurants are closed and concerts are cancelled - probably until the end of April.Plus - movies are getting pulled off the release schedule, sports events have been cancelled. Streaming media, social media and youtube are going to be a major source of entertainment. But its kind of a “one at a time” effort - not a shared experience.
So, on WZUM, we’re going to try to share a lot of Pittsburgh with you. On the Scene, we’ll dip into some of the recent recordings from Pittsburgh favorites - plus some links to special things to put a smile on your face.
The Scene - Thursdays at 6pm, Friday at Saturdays at noon, Sundays at 5pm on WZUM.
