Sembène Film Festival: The Last of the Blue Devils at Alphabet City / City of Asylum, North Side
Nick-named The Kansas City Jazz Story, this legendary 1979 documentary was made at two musical gatherings in old Kansas City, and consists largely of impromptu musical performances by Big Joe Turner, Count Bassie, Jay McShann, Jimmy Forrest, and Ernie Williams, among others, in various combinations. Throughout is the Kansas City sound: cool and relaxed, blues meeting swing, an afterbeat that calls for dancing.
