Man Dee is hosting a hybrid online and in person concert of music by the great composer and arranger Billy Strayhorn. Strayhorn was raised in Homewood, Pittsburgh, PA, and attended Westinghouse High School where he wrote his first musical. Upon meeting Duke Ellington and moving to New York, he went on to greatly influence American popular music through his contributions as an arranger and composer. Our jazz and musical community has so much pride in his legacy.
Phat Man Dee is presenting this celebration of him and his work for Pride month, because in addition to his incredible legacy as a composer and musician, his very existence as an openly Gay Black man living in this world was and is still a revolutionary statement. The songs he composed when he was just 16 years old are still performed today, and as an adult he earned the respect of his fellow musical giants.
Selections include Strayhorn Compositions - Something to Live For; Satin Doll; Take the A Train; Just a Sittin' and a Rockin'; Isfahan; UMMG; After All; Daydream; A Flower is a Lovesome Thing; and, Lush Life.
