54th Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert - Sam Rivers Concert, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Hill District
Pitt Music Chair A J Johnson leads the Pitt Community Collaborative Jazz Orchestra (PCCJO) along with guest musicians from Rivers' Rivbea Orchestras in New York and Orlando.
Performers include Joseph Daley (tuba) and Steve Coleman (saxophone), both of whom worked with Sam in New York during the early days of Studio Rivbea and beyond; and Doug Mathews (bass & clarinet) and Craig Harris (trombone) who worked with Sam during his years in Orlando.
Rivers was widely known in both traditional and avant-garde jazz circles. His extensive archive, which includes hundreds of scores and unreleased audio and video performances, was recently acquired by the University of Pittsburgh Library System.
