While growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, Steve Turre immersed himself in the musical styles of mariachi, blues and jazz. He eventually joined the Escovedo Brothers band where he honed his skills as a salsa musician. He joined Ray Charles's band in 1972, and a year later he became one of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
After playing with Blakey, he went on to play with a litany of jazz and Latin jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Pharoah Sanders, Max Roach and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
In addition to recording and touring, Steve has been a member of the Saturday Night Live Band on NBC since 1984.
