Tenor sax master Stanley Turrentine was a native of Pittsburgh’s Hill district, his career spanned decades and took him around the world. In the 1950’s, he went on the road with the bands of Lowell Fulson and Earl Bostic, plus gigs with Tadd Dameron in Cleveland. After a pause for the Army, Stanley came back to Pittsburgh in 1959 and was quickly hired by Max Roach. Playing with Max Roach brought Stanley to the notice of Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records - and in 1960, an exclusive contract for the future tenor legend.
This 4 CD set gathers together the music of 8 of his classic releases from Blue Note Records:
Look Out! (His Blue Note debut as a leader, with Horace Parlan); Blue Hour (with the Three Sounds featuring Gene Harris); Comin' Your Way (joined by Tommy Turrentine and Horace Parlan); Up at Minton's, Volume 1 & 2 (with Horace Parlan and Grant Green); Dearly Beloved (with Shirley Scott); Z.T.'s Blues (with Tommy Flanagan, Grant Green and Paul Chambers); and That's Where It's At (with Les McCann).
Classic and diverse sounds from the beginnings of Stanley Turrentine’s time with Blue Note Records, with an informative booklet and hours of great music.
