Tony Salvatori, Jimmy Rushing, Buddy Rich, George Benson and holiday connections on the Scene

Another week in the Hanley homestudio led to the uncovering of vinyl and digital things - including a roaring big band with jazz and blues singer Jimmy Rushing with great charts by Al Cohn.

We also found the interview with bass trombonist and bandleader Tony Salvatori, a Wheeling original who spent nearly 30 years in the New York City music scene, including work on Broadway in the orchestra for the original production of Pippin, tours with the Buddy Rich Big Band and a raft of other recordings too numerous to list. After coming back to the region (and the signal range of WZUM), he’s been advocating music and music education through the American Heritage Orchestra.

Also on the program, a track from the newest George Benson release, “Weekend in London,” new seasonal sounds from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Harry Connick, Jr, and a visit with Jingles the Christmas Cat with Freddy Cole and Pittsburgh native, guitarist Jerry Byrd.

And more from our vinyl to digital dub of that wonderful Jimmy Rushing album!

The Scene - Thursday nights at 6, Sunday nights at 5 and Friday and Saturday at noon WZUM.
