This has been a week of extra challenges and memories on the Scene in Pittsburgh. As we’ve noted, COVID-19 has put a halt to all live, in person performances. It has also put your erstwhile host, Scott Hanley into isolation over symptoms and such. With unavailable testing for many, and isolation for all, this is a time of community and separation. WZUM is fortunate to have recordings, connections and the megaphone of our website and radio signals, and the ability to keep a safe distance with technology - but we will admit, it is disquieting.
With many jazz favorites in their senior years, it is always a concern when we lose some of our friends and favorites. The past week or so has been an especially strong in reminder to be grateful for the moments we share.
This week, we share music from a number of our favorites who have recently passed - pianist Mike Longo, percussionist Ray Mantilla, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, trumpeter Wallace Roney, and pianist Ellis Marsalis.
We also revisit our meeting from January with Pittsburgh area native who is very much with us, vocalist Aimée Allen, who did one last tour of France just before tours were halted.
Music and memories - and appreciation -
The Scene - Thursdays at 6pm, Friday at Saturdays at noon, Sundays at 5pm on WZUM.
