Our time at home has left us the chance to delve into our vinyl collection and get some of it digitized to the WZUM library - and also, we’ve gotten some old friends back into the fold from decades ago.
While celebrating Richie Cole’s life and career a few weeks ago, we discovered some new places for records we have missed for many years - and now, they are found!
What’s most enjoyable (yet time consuming) about bringing vinyl records into the digital realm -unlike “ripping” a CD or uploading an audio file, you can only add the music one way - by playing the record. It was an immersive experience from which we are delighted to share the fruits of our labor.
Join us as we delve into a delightful recording by Pittsburgh native Eddie Jefferson from 1976 with Bobby Tucker on keyboards, Waymon Reed on trumpet and Carnegie’s adopted alto sax icon, Richie Cole.
In the early 1980’s Richie Cole teamed up with the former music director for Hawaiian singer Don Ho - pianist Bobby Enriquez - the “Wildman.” Their record with guitarist Bruce Forman is a delight.
We take a stop to visit bandleader and saxophonist Georgie Auld, whom you may remember from the 1977 movie “New York, New York.” He played the band leader Robert De Niro worked for, was “technical consultant” for the film - meaning that’s him playing Tenor throughout.
Woody Herman. A 50 year career, and we’ve been working to get more of his big band’s tracks into the WZUM library. We add to the archive with some wonderful tracks from 1979 - featuring a solo turn by Stan Getz with the big band, then an exciting rendition of a tune Dizzy Gillespie wrote for Herman, “Woody N’ You,” featuring Dizzy, plus trumpeter Woody Shaw, and Jeannette, PA native, Slide Hampton.
And we finish the hour off with more Eddie Jefferson and a 1963 gem from pianist and vocalist Shirley Horn.
Adding to the library with sonic delights - on the Scene on WZUM.
