Guitarist John Scofield’s career started in the 1970’s with many interesting connections. One of them, from his earliest years, was making music with bassist Steve Swallow, an innovative performer and composer who has been on the leading edge of forward looking jazz for decades.
We have an extended visit with John Scofield about his new project with bassist Steve Swallow, “SWALLOW TALES,” on ECM Records, especially featuring compositions of Steve Swallow.
We also talk with John Scofield about his early years, that led him from rock to jazz, to his unique sound, and even a fabulous and unexpected recording session in 1977 with legendary pianist, singer and bandleader Jay McShann.
Back in June, we thought we’d have a “new” Thelonious Monk CD by now. From the Press release, “In the fall of 1968, a sixteen-year old high school student named Danny Scher had a dream to invite legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk and his all-star quartet to perform a concert at his local high school in Palo Alto, CA.”
The concert was fortuitously recorded by the High School janitor. We will get to hear a track from it, but the record’s release has been stalled over what appears to be a contract dispute with Monk’s prior record label.
