MCG Jazz’s Marty Ashby reaches back to the rich trove of interviews from the stage of MCGJazz - featuring highlights from a visit with Tony Mowod from 1996 before a Sunday matinée - trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer and bandleader Chuck Mangione.
Chuck talks about his early years in upstate New York, including the band with his brother, Gap Mangione, which made a visit back in the late 50’s to Pittsburgh’s Crawford Grille.
Stories of jazz greats in the Mangione living room in New York, enjoying a family dinner of spaghetti, Chuck being recruited before he left high school by Pittsburgh’s Art Blakey - and later leaving the Eastman School of Music to Join the Jazz Messengers with a roster in the mid-60’s that included bassist Reggie Workman and pianist Keith Jarrett.
Then, the years of hits with Chuck Mangione’s own band - including massive hits like Chase the Clouds Away and Feels So Good.
Music and memories with Chuck Mangione from the stage of MCG Jazz - and on the radio in the MCG Jazz Spotlight. The MCG Jazz Spotlight on WZUM - Friday and Sunday nights at 6, and Saturday afternoon at 1.
