Echoes from the PIJF - BPEP Jazz - and The PSO, Jazz Poetry, MCG Jazz and more are on deck

This is the week after a phenomenal week for jazz in Pittsburgh - from Monday’s legion of Pittsburgh performers for BPEP Jazz at the Heinz History Center to the weekend of headliners at the Pittsburgh international Jazz Festival 2021

We celebrate the riches we’ve enjoyed and those to come - including visits with Pittsburgh natives Jeff “Tain” Watts, David Budway and Richie Goods, plus chat with Ravi Coltrane, Paul Bollenback, Brian Lynch, Luques Curtis, Louis Fouché and Joey Calderazzo.

Plus, a chat with saxophonists Winston Bell about what it was like to sit in on Saturday with bassist Marcus Miller, and Lakecia Benjamin, who played through challenges from a serious car accident in Cleveland last week to persevere and play a wonderful set at the PIJF.

September also has more from Jazz Poetry Month at Alphabet City - including the trio Thumbscrew - we chatted with bassist Michael Formanek their residency and performance for City of Asylum which premieres online Thursday Sept 23 at 7 (and available online, after). MCG Jazz has sold-out shows by the Yellowjackets on September 24-25 to start Season 35 - and also the first shows for the newly renovated concert hall at MCG.

September is a month to appreciate jazz in Pittsburgh, and jazz is returning the favor!

The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5.
