2022 is starting with great jazz in Pittsburgh - Much in person, and a bunch online.
One online series is helmed by drummer, teacher and historian Thomas Wendt - the Vinyl Report - back for a second season from the August Wilson African American Cultural Center - and this time featuring guests, including famed sculptor Thaddeus Mosely in January - sharing his insights to the classic album Bird with Strings from 1950. We visit with Thomas about the project and also about the return to jazz at the Backstage Bar in February.
Coming up in Pittsburgh on January 24-29, Pitt’s 51st Annual Jazz Seminar will celebrate Erroll Garner. This year, online only, but with great artists talking about music and Garner in particular - and especially about Erroll Garner’s special place in the history of music rights and creative control.
Headliner for the week is noted pianist, composer and bandleader Orrin Evans - and we hear some of his newest release, and also talk about Erroll Garner and the music business in general.
Sounds of Bird, Garner, Orrin Evans - and a civil rights anthem from Dr. BIlly Taylor
The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5.
