Pittsburgh has had a nice turn of visitors coming to town in the jazz scene as winter turns to spring - and we’ve also seen a great blooming of artists from here with new recordings making a splash at home and away.
This time, we spend time listening to a good sampling - including:
Deanna Witkowski’s new project, Force of nature
the Con Alma compilation, State of Mind;
Jared Sims’ new release, Against All Odds, and the new broad-ranging project from the multi generational DeFade Family.
Plus, some new and newish sounds from Roger Romero (Feralcat or F3RALCAT), Phat Man Dee and Noel Quintana featuring his longtime friend, trumpeter Ray Vega.
Also - drummer, historian, bandleader and multimedia host Thomas Wendt has a new project shining a light on guitarist Jimmy Ponder along with guitarist Mark Strickland on a new episode of the Vinyl Report from the August Wilson African American Cultural Center.
There’s no place like home - and in Pittsburgh Jazz, there’s good reason to click our shoes together!
The SCENE on WZUM - Thursday at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel.
