Women in Jazz - visiting with singers with great stories - Vanessa Rubin, Alexis Cole and Kat Edmonson.
We visited with each of them just before the COVID-19 times - with music projects and tours put on hold and alterations for two years - and now - some great things to share.
Vanessa Rubin is coming to Kente Arts for her April 9th tribute to Tadd Dameron - delayed two years almost to the day. She’s been living between Cleveland and New York in recent times, and this is her first chance to bring her tribute to the great fellow Cleveland native. She’s calling this her “Ohio Premiere” of the band on her project “The Dream is You - Tadd Dameron” which came out just before COVID-19.
Also, vocalist Kat Edmonson, who we talked with in March 2020 about her pending show at Club Cafe - which is now happening after a two year wait - April 12, 2022. In the meanwhile, she began hosting her own dream - an online variety show.
We also visit with pianist, teacher and vocalist Alexis Cole - who’s Covid detour took her to a cabin in eastern Pennsylvania, a tour to South Korea, and Hawaii, and a new big band album led by Jeff Jarvis. She is also a leader of a new Vocal Jazz Summit event April 8-10 in Virginia Beach, VA (and online) which includes Kurt Elling, Samara Joy, Rene Marie and more.
We’ll also share a track from Samara Joy - who was a student of Alexis Cole’s at SUNY-Purchase.
The SCENE on WZUM - Thursday at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel.
