Jazz Appreciation Month is April - and WZUM, where we appreciate jazz every day and night, there’s even more things to celebrate.
With the return to more live jazz and touring artists, Pittsburgh is becoming an important early stop, as we heard last week from Vanessa Rubin and Kat Edmonson, coming to town in April.
Also added to the lineup - veteran pianist Michael Weiss, who also has a release out on Cellar Live records with Eric Alexander on Tenor.
Michael Weiss is coming to Pittsburgh for a live and online show at Alphabet City on the North Side, Sunday April 10th - and he’ll also do a quick trio hit at 6 on Tuesday at Con Alma, Downtown.
Michael Weiss’ career has been filled with highlights, including work with notables like Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Frank Wess, George Coleman, Jimmy Heath, Lou Donaldson, Wynton Marsalis and many more.
We talked with Michael about the new record, his visit to Pittsburgh - and also one of his major influences and close friends, the recently departed pianist Barry Harris. Michael Weiss has also been influence by Pittsburgh jazz figures such as Earl Hines, and had the chance to perform with the trumpeter and composer Tommy Turrentine.
We talked for more than an hour - so we’ll just have some snippet - plus, of course, music!
Also - the newly announced Spring season for Pittsburgh JazzLive is out - and a special concert at the end of April with pianist Christian Sands at the Greer Cabaret.
Much jazz to be appreciated on the Scene in Pittsburgh as we enter into April!
A reminder, too - Vanessa Rubin is coming to Kente Arts for her April 9th tribute to Tadd Dameron, and vocalist Kat Edmonson, comes to the Southside April 12th at Club Cafe.
The SCENE on WZUM - Thursday at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel.
