Kate Borger shares happy music with a tinge of remembrance on Rhythm-a-Ning
Remembering Astrid Gilberto, who passed away in early June. Kate shares performances by Gilberto with Tom Jobim and also Pittsburgh’s Stanley Turrentine.
Pittsburgh’s Ahmad Jamal is also featured doing Morton Gould’s “Pavane” and the Gershwin’s “But Not for Me.”
The rich-voiced Johnny Hartman was not from Pittsburgh, but he did sing with Pittsburgh natives Earl Hines and Erroll Garner (and record a marvelous version of “Lush Life” with John Coltrane - the tune, by Pittsburgh’s Billy Strayhorn).
Add in Sounds from New Orleans, Billie Holiday, Django Reinhardt and new star Samara Joy and it is truly joyful hour with Kate Borger!
Friday morning at 10, Saturday morning at 11, on WZUM.
