BPEP Jazz - Lighthouse Arts Jazz - The Baylor Project - Celebrating Dwayne Dolphin and more on the Scene
BPEP Jazz is back - the 18th Pittsburgh jazz reunion and fundraiser for the Black Political Empowerment Project is coming the the Heinz History Center - Monday October 9th from 5:30-10:30 - anchored by Roger Humphries and the RH Factor and the Tim Stevens Project - and about 75 total jazz instrumentalists and singers slated to appear during the night. We visit with Tim Stevens about it - and listen to sounds that you might hear.
Lighthouse arts is back on the scene - Thomas Wendt - the busy drummer, historian, band leader and organizer is concert archives is bringing monthly concerts to the Morgan Lee Arts Centre in the Hill District - featuring the Precipice Community band Saturday afternoon October 21st - we visit with Thomas about it - and also hear about more concerts coming to the Hill.
Tuesdays at the Lounge at the Greer Cabaret in the Cultural District on Penn Avenue have a new glow with the renovated and enlarged spaces - and soon a spotlight will be shining inside the Cabaret theater itself with the Baylor Project coming on Tuesday October 17th. That will also be a very special night of honor to Pittsburgh jazz legend Dwayne Dolphin - he’s been announced as the recipient of the 2023 JazzLive Legacy award.
From the release from the Cultural Trust - Dwayne Dolphin is a mainstay in the jazz scene, working with Pittsburgh greats such as Roger Humphries, Pete Henderson, and Carl Arter. Throughout his career, Dolphin has played and recorded with the “Who’s Who” of music, such as Wynton Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, Melba Moore, Fred Wesley, and Abby Lincoln, to name a few.
WZUM will be on hand and we’ll capture the festivities to celebrate one of our favorite bass players!
Also coming this month - guitarist Oscar Peñas will be playing at Alphabet City on October 18th - featuring his working group from his new release “Chicken or Pasta,” including violist Sara Caswell.
Plus, Kenia is on stage for the Washington Jazz Society - October 25th with Max Leake (piano), Dwayne Dolphin (bass), Dave Throckmorton (drums) at the Loft Conference Center, 1000 Noble Energy Drive, Canonsburg
