The Baylor Project, Spin Cycle, Dwayne Dolphin, Oscar Peñas and visit with TS Monk on the Scene

With a Fall filled with jazz events still roaring forth, we look at the Jazz Central Calendar with a smile.

The just ended world premier run of “Billy Strayhorn: Something to Live For” was an amazing thing for Pittsburgh (even with the number of live performances truncated by illness).

We also have more to marvel at - touring artists Etienne Charles for Kente Arts at the New Hazlett, October 28; the band Spin Cycle coming to Con Alma, October 18th; Guitarist Oscar Peñas will be playing at Alphabet City with violinist Sara Caswell at Alphabet City, also on the 18th; pianist Matthew Whitaker with his own band Saturday October 14th at MCG Jazz with two shows.

Plus - The Baylor Project on Tuesday October 17th with a jazz event at the newly renovated Greer Cabaret Theater, downtown - a night that will also feature the presentation of the latest BNY Mellon JazzLive Legacy award to bassist, educator and jazz advocate Dwayne Dolphin.

Dwayne will also be featured on bass with Brazilian jazz vocalist Kenia for the Washington Jazz Society Wednesday October 25th in Southpointe along with notables Max Leake (piano), and David Throckmorton (drums)

PLUS - a just announced homecoming with pianist Jeff Lashway and vocalist Laura Minteer joining Reggie Watkins at Con Alma, October 17th

There’s even more to search out at the Jazz Central Calendar in October and beyond - please check it out!

Also on the program - we celebrate the October 10th birthday of Thelonious Monk through a visit with his son, drummer and producer TS Monk - including the story about how TS got his first drum kit from Pittsburgh’s Art Blakey!
