NEA Jazz Masters - and Jazz Appreciation Month April on the Scene

April is Jazz Appreciation Month - and WZUM is joining with @NEAarts and @kennedycenter to kickoff Jazz Appreciation Month with a special live stream of the 2023 #NEAJazzMasters Tribute. It will be on our homepage as a live stream at WZUM.org for the 7:30 Saturday night event - Plus, we’ll be broadcasting the whole event on the radio, Sunday night at 7, right at the MCG Spotlight Show.

This year’ honorees have a close connection to the airwaves of WZUM - including violinist Regina Carter, just in for a very special show back in December at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center.

Also honored this year - Detroit natives like Regina Carter, famed drummer Louis Hayes (we’ll play music from him with Pittsburgh’s Steve Nelson) and sax master Kenny Garrett. Being honored this year, posthumously, Sue Mingus recipient of the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship for Jazz Advocacy.

The live event concert will be at the Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Saturday, April 1 at 7:30pm. You can stream it from the WZUM homepage as well a the NEA and the Kennedy Center.

Also on the Scene - Grammy Winning vocalist Samara Joy will be returning to Pittsburgh, but NOT on April 15th at MCG Jazz - the show has been rescheduled to June 30th. We hear her music, and revisit our chat with her from last summer before the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.

Also - New music from Ricki Lee Jones (she calls it her first “grown up” record), and new sounds with Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.

Plus - Danilo Perez - who brings his Global Messengers to MCG Jazz for two shows, Saturday night.

The Scene - an hourlong radio show - Thursday night at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday at 5 on WZUM
