Both Sides of Joni Mitchell with Monika Herzig - and Generations of Jazz with Steve Turre on the Scene

Three years ago, we did an interview with pianist and bandleader about her pending concert at MCG Jazz with the all-female supergroup, SHEROS. The conversation was wonderful and the music even better - but the radio show was as close as we got to bringing Monika to town - as the pandemic shut down her concert tour just days before the show in Pittsburgh.

In the midst of the covid times - Monika Herzig and vocalist Janiece Jaffe worked on a new conception for the music of Joni Mitchell. That project was developed in the early days of COVID-19 and a CD project was recorded and just released.

Sadly, Janiece Jaffe died at the end of 2022, but Monika Herzig kept the sounds going - and will bring the arrangements to MCG Jazz April 22nd with vocalist Alexis Cole (whom we have visited with on WZUM, too). Join us as we talk with Monika Herzig about the music of Joni Mitchell, about women in jazz and much more, also her SHEROS band with a tribute to Gerri Allen. We’ll also play music from Alexis Cole with guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli.

Also on April 22nd, trombonist Steve Turre brings his new “Generations” project to the New Hazlett Theater for Kente Arts. We’ll play sounds from his latest release with his multi-generational band, plus music from one of the guest stars joining in - saxophonist James Carter.

And - music from the new release from Don Aliquo, Jr!

The Scene - an hourlong radio show - Thursday night at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday at 5 on WZUM
