50 Years of the Jazz Workshop Inc - and Summer Sounds on the Pittsburgh Scene

2023 marks the 50 anniversary of the founding of Pittsburgh’s Jazz Workshop Inc - founded by Harold Young in 1973 after the merger of Pittsburgh’s segregated musician union locals in the 1960’s.

On Scene on WZUM - we visit with Dr. Jacqueline L. Young, Executive Director of the Jazz Workshop - about the continuing work of the JWI - and about the celebration concert coming to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater - Saturday July 29 at 7.

The July 29th show will feature the CDS Quartet - pianist/vocalist Mala Waldron, drummer Bobby Sanabria, vibraphonist Jay Hoggard and Pittsburgh native (now in New York), bassist Christopher Dean Sullivan.

We’ll also feature players prominent on the scene this summer - Roger Humphries and the RH Factor, trombonist/vocalist Hailey Brinnel (coming to Kingfly Spirits in August), guitarist Andy Bianco - back to Pittsburgh from NYC at Con Alma this weekend.

Plus, some players who just left town - trombonist Altin Sencalar, and guitarist, vocalist and radio host John Pizzarelli.

And a new single from an upcoming release by Pittsburgh’s Norside Organ Trio.

The Scene Thursday night at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday at 5 on WZUM.
