Charlie Parker cuts a cake; Dizzy Gillespie looks on

Vocalist, songwriter, bandleader, visual artist Carmen Lundy comes to Pittsburgh for Kente Arts Sept 9th - we visit with her and share some music. She’ll be in Pittsburgh with a trio that features her brother, notable bassist Curtis Lundy.

We talk about her music on the radio - but here on the web page, we also talk about her paintings and sculpture!

The latest from Peter Stumpf on the 8th Piano Day Pittsburgh - set for the daytime of that same day.

Also - pianist Tom Roberts has a dinner and a show in Southpointe this month - September 13th.

A jazz organ trio is coming, too - and the Pittsburgh international Jazz Festival, too - John Shannon fills us in on the Norside and John Shannon Alliance - September 15.

The Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival will take the stages September 14-17, and has also added some new events leading up to the Festival with the support of RAD and the Carnegie Libraries.

Charlie Parker - “Bird” - the innovative saxophonist and composer and a key leader in the development of Bebop in the 1940’s was born August 29, 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Parker did not do a lot of recorded interviews, but one truly fascinating one was done with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond in 1954 with radio host John McLellan in Boston. Saxophonist Bob Reynolds of Snarky Puppy has a link to it at his personal web site. We share a bit of it with you on the show - and encourage you to click on the link for all of it.

On the radio show, we listen to classic sounds of Charlie Parker with Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Miles Davis and more.

Tune in - Thursday night at 6, repeated Saturday at noon and Sunday at 5 on “THE SCENE” on WZUM - All on the radio on WZUM!
