Drumming Icon Roger Humphries and Legendary photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris get new honors in Pittsburgh.
Last week was a major acknowledgement of the importance of two iconic figures in Pittsburgh, in black Pittsburgh and with close connections to the jazz community of Pittsburgh and the world
On Friday, September 27th at 11am - E. Jefferson Street on the Northside was renamed Roger Humphries Way in an event sponsored by the city of Pittsburgh and with more than 100 people in attendance - including musical notables like Max Leake and Dwayne Dolphin, many members of the Humphries Family and a remarkable showing of political leaders from Pittsburgh and the region. It was a cloudy morning, but the event truly shone.
Then, at 1:30 on the 27th, many of the same notables headed over to Homewood for an important unveiling of a historical marker in front of the longtime home of legendary Pittsburgh-based photograher, Charles”Teenie” Harris. It was at first a light rain, and then heavy showers, but the crowd was enthusiastic. His family and neighbors were represented, and great stories about the importance of Teenie Harris for the Pittsburgh Courier, black Pittsburgh and his unique, broad and rich chronicle of the African American Experience.
It was a a great day in Pittsburgh. There will be more to come.
We have a link to the video of the whole Roger Humphries Way experience on this page, and will edit together our WZUM video of the Teenie Harris event, soon.
Also - put on your calendar - the Carnegie Museum of Art will have new exhibit of the photography of Charles “Teenie” Harris, along with oral histories from many of the subjects of those photos. The new exhibit will be open November 2nd.
