Sean Jones and More at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival- The Scene WZUM

Jazz, Community and Leadership

We visit with our longtime friend and colleague Sean Jones - trumpeter, record producer, educator and so much more. Sean is Currently the Chair of Jazz at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Conservatory and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz ensemble. Sean grew up on Warren, Ohio, and also spent many year in Pittsburgh as a professor and performer

We had a long, wide-ranging chat with Sean, and will broadcast a bit of it - and put most of it hear on the page. Suffice it to say, Sean has great hope for the future and healing power of music.

Sean will lead his own small group for the Jazz festival on Sunday September 22nd, and also be a part of Ohio native and saxophonist / composer / educator Chris Coles’ “Nine Lives Project” Saturday night September 21st.

We also hear music from other upcoming festival highlights - Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band (with a new release), vocalist Vanisha Gould, Robert Glasper and Emmet Cohen.

We also remember our friend and colleague Evelynn Hawkins, a tremendous voice and supporter of music and community who left as all too soon this week.

The Scene - Thursdays at 6pm, Friday at Saturdays at noon, Sundays at 5pm on WZUM.
