The Jazz Scene into the New Year in Pittsburgh

We have a number of interviews and new things to share from the Jazz Congress in New York City, last week - and we’ll have more of those stories, soon.

But we also were telling friends in New York about what’s going on in Pittsburgh - and there are a lot of sounds and stories happening, here - and we’ll touch on just a bit of it.

Among the things happening - we know there is a new, long awaited CD from Pittsburgh piano master Max Leake - we don’t have it to share, yet - but stay tuned! For now, we turn to his TRIOS record from 2004 with Max and a Wayne Shorter tune that features Dwayne Dolphin - bass and Greg Humphries - drums.

Back and active on the scene of late (recently at Con Alma), we hear guitarist Teddy Pantelas.

Also - a couple of tunes from the Small Hours Trio - playing Sunday June 19 at Con Alma - Margot Jezerc - vocals; Bryce Rabideau - mandolin; and Jason Rafalak - bass.

Always busy on the Scene - vocalist Bethany James (with Mark Lucas and Subha Das a the Breezeway Home, Saturday the 25th) and Tony Campbell on Monday nights with the Jazz Session at Con Alma and a Jazz Brunch salute to Rich James, Teena Marie and the Isley Brothers at City Winery, Sunday February 2nd. We hear Tony and Bethany from the recent Tony Campbell recording Blues, Ballads and Beyond.

Add in Andrew Kirk’s new one with trumpeter John D’Earth (Andrew at Con Alma - Thursday the 16th); Paul Cosentino and the Boilermaker Jazz Band every Thursday at Golden Age Beer; Tom Roberts - who has an online presentation about forgotten Pittsburgh Legends - Tuesday the 28th (and online hints at a new recording coming out, too???)

So much to enjoy - check out the Jazz Central Calendar!!!

Plus - we share a gem from the old Pittsburgh Jazz Society events at Fosters in Oakland - Trumpeter Danny Conn with Joe Negri - guitar, Roger Humphries - drums; Max Leake - piano and Dwayne Dolphin - bass.

Treasures in our midst.

The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Sunday at 5pm, Friday and Saturday at noon on WZUM.
