In 1982, veteran record producer Michael Cuscuna and Charlie Laurie started Mosaic Records. The company specializes in small runs of recordings from jazz masters - getting licenses to make new box sets of often long out-of-print gems. With a limited run of just a few thousand copies, many of these boxed sets are out of print, again.
Marty and Renée dug into some great sets from Mosaic and other rare finds for this week’s show:
John Coltrane with “Like Someone in Love” from the release “Lush Life” on Prestige - that featured a pianoless trio when Red Garland was unable to make the 1957 recording date.
Music from the Modern Jazz Quartet from the collection “40 years”
Exotic sounds from the Chico Hamilton Quintet
And unique, rich, big bands sounds from a an all-star band led by Quincy Jones, including a favorite for fans of Tony Mowod, For Lena and Lennie.
