Drummer Jimmy Cobb passed away this week at the age of 91. He had a rich career that spanned seventy years - including Earl Bostic, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Wes Montgomery, to the legendary Miles Davis “Kind of Blue” session in 1959 - to decades of collaborations with jazz greats to follow including being feted as an NEA Jazz Master in 2009.
There have been many remembrances to the career of this jazz master. One especially good interview to check out is from 2009 with jazz journalist Marc Myers, a four part exploration into the breadth of Master Cobb’s life and career.
We’ll share music and some memories of an influential musical life well lived. Plus more from the Pittsburgh Jazz Scene this week.
Remembering Jimmy Cobb - on the Scene - Thursday at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5.
