The Scene on WZUM with Scott Hanley
On this program, we continue to celebrate Black History Month with a focus on Pittsburgh Jazz – especially on drummer, bandleader and educator Roger Humphries. Roger is well known world-wide for his work with Horace Silver, Ray Charles, Stanley Turrentine and a legion more. But another legion is of musicians Roger influenced by leaving the road and coming back to Pittsburgh, where he has taught and mentored more than two generations of outstanding musicians and music lovers from his hometown.
We will also hear from one of Roger’s students – drummer Thomas Wendt. Thomas has a new audio project from the non-profit group LIGHTHOUSE ARTS – and we’ll give you part one of a series on jazz great, drummer Max Roach (also, one of Roger Humphries’ mentors!).
Then, we chat with Lighthouse Arts Co-president Harry Clark about Lighthouse Arts and the importance of listening – and we listen to a track from the outstanding CD they produced, The Past is The Present. There’s also a video archive of some of the great concerts they have put on in their space in Aspinwall in the recent past.
Finally, a musical tribute to vocalist and bandleader and musical force of nature, Jimmy Sapienza, who passed away last week at the age of 71.
The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Sundays at 5pm, Friday and Saturday at noon on WZUM.
