With the coming Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, concerts with MCG Jazz, Kente Arts and much more - the month of September is building to a massive number of musical opportunities.
This week, we talk with bass legend Ron Carter, who opens the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, September 16 with his Foursight Quartet. We learned that his record-setting number of jazz recordings on his Wikipedia page (2,221 last we saw) may actually be low by a few hundred.
We talk with Ron about just of few of his musical experiences of late - and what its like to be on the set of movies like “Round Midnight” and “Kansas City.”
Ron Carter went Rochester’s Eastman School of Music - as did bassist Tony Levin of the Levin Brothers band - coming to This is Red in Munhall. They say “hi” to each other…and Tony Levin shares the differences between touring on the road with King Crimson or Peter Gabriel vs the Levin Brothers Band (one has more busses, the others may have a few more accouterments).
We also talk with rising jazz star vocalist Samara Joy, playing the PIJF, and pianist Orrin Evans, coming back for the whole week of the Jazz Festival, including leading the Jam Session at the August Wilson Center, join in for a night at Con Alma, and more.
Plus, Music from Catherine Russell, playing for Kente Arts at the New Hazlett Theater, September 10th.
