Alan Gorrie of the AWB at the PIJF and New Sounds from Near and Far on The Scene on WZUM

The Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival (PIJF) is coming, and an expanding array of performances are tied in with the event, along with the return to “Free and In the Streets” September 21-22.

Sunday September 22 has a highlight with the final tour of Average White Band - Sunday afternoon at 4:45, right after pianist Emmett Cohen and just before Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band.

Alan Gorrie of the AWB

We visit with Alan Gorrie, cofounder of AWB and hear about the band, its origins and return to touring in 1989 after years busy with other projects. AWB is on its final tour this year. Alan Gorrie also talks about visual art, painting - and that logo for the band which started as his own drawing many decades ago.

We’ll also feature other artists at the PIJF from Orrin Evans and Emmett Cohen and their newest releases, plus highlight some other Festival headliners - Bassist Endea Owens and vocalist Marsha Ambrosius.

Plus, the new releases from the John Shannon Organ Trio and pianist Theron Brown (headliners from last week’s Monroeville Jazz Festival), and vocalist Veronica Swift - making Friday September 13th lucky with a show at the Original Pittsburgh Winery.

The Scene - Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5.
