Sean will lead his own small group for the Jazz festival on Sunday September 22nd, and also be a part of Chris Coles’ “Nine Lives Project” Saturday night September 21st.

We also hear music from other upcoming festival highlights - Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band, Vanisha Gould, Robert Glasper and Emmet Cohen.

We also remember our friend and colleague Evelynn Hawkins, a tremendous voice and supporter of music and community who left as all too soon this week.

Brazilian, jazz and dance innovator Sergio Mendes has died at the age of 83.

Famed Record Producer Creed Taylor created an influential catalog of work, including releases on Bethlehem, ABC-Paramount, Impulse, Verve, A&M records and his own CTI label.

The Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival is coming, and an expanding array of performances are tied in with the event, along with the return to “Free and In the Streets” September 21-22. We visit with Alan Gorrie, cofounder of the Average White Band, making Pittsburgh an important stop on their last-ever tour on Sunday the 22nd. Plus, music from Theron Brown, the John Shannon Organ Trio, Veronica Swift, Endea Owens and the closing act for the PIJF, vocalist Marsha Ambrosius.

We’ll also share music from guitarist Russell Malone who has died of an apparent heart attack August 23 while on tour in Japan. He was 60.
